• Lifestyle • 5 Podcasts I have LOVED

5 of the best podcasts || Jane Wonder Blog

Hiya everyone

My latest obsession - podcasts! My iPhone was on its last legs and wouldn't store any music (no matter how many times I downloaded the bloody song) and I have been so over the radio lately, so I popped onto social media and asked which podcasts my friends would recommend. I had never listened to a podcast before so I really was at their mercy.

Another question piqued my interest - why on earth did they call this type of audio a podcast? So, nerdy li'l ol' me went to investigate. The word arose as a portmanteau of "iPod" and "broadcast", so I am guessing the first podcast was probably broadcast on an Apple device. I decided that, in that case, the Podcast app on my iPhone would do.

5 of the best podcasts || True Crime || Jane Wonder Blog

The first podcast which I ever listened to was Serial, season 1 is a 12-part series on a murder in Baltimore. It really was super riveting and does feature as one of my favourites, but it didn't make the list because season 2 didn't grab me nearly as much as season 1.

S•Town is bought to us by This American Life - the same people who bought us Serial. I heard about it on the Serial show and thought it would, too, be a murder mystery.

Turns out it wasn't. But boy, am I glad that I carried on listening! John B McLemore contacts Brian Reed and says that there is a young man from his small town in Alabama that is bragging about getting away with murder. Brian is intrigued and after a year of exchanging emails and several months of conversation with McLemore, producer Brian Reed traveled to the small town in Alabama to investigate. I won't give anything away but Brian tells us about hanging out with John and other characters, learns about antique clocks, sundial mottos, mercury poisoning, garden mazes, hidden treasure and a death.

I cried like a small child when I finished the show, Brian did an excellent job at humanising all of the characters, it felt like I knew them personally.

I stumbled across Ctrl Alt Delete purely by chance. Emma Gannon is an author, writer, blogger and podcaster from the UK. She had interviewed Estee Lalonde, who I follow on YouTube, Insta and Twitter, so I think I must have seen a link to Emma's podcast there.

Every episode she has a guest, ranging from Zoella to Mara Wilson (Matilda) to Lena Dunham to Matt Haig to Tavi Gevinson to Henry Holland, where they discuss their relationship with the internet. She covers topics like blogging and social media, mental health and anxiety, motherhood, and feminism. There's something for everyone, with over 100 episodes there are plenty that will appeal to you and some that you may skip.

They are easy-listening episodes and I have learnt so much whilst listening to them. I highly recommend!

I am a huge fan of true crime podcasts. I have tried to not fill this post with them in case they're not your thing (but I promise I could do a whole post dedicated to true crime podcasts). I was utterly obsessed with Up & Vanished once I listened to the first episode. I came across the name of this podcast, as well as a few other awesome true crime podcasts, on a Buzzfeed article that had shows recommended by the Buzzfeed community.

Up & Vanished is hosted by Payne Lindsey, a documentarian turned amateur investigator. This may sound weird, but I really liked listening to his voice. He always sounds very mysterious which lends a hand to the eeriness of the content.

He explores the unsolved disappearance of Georgia beauty queen and high school teacher, Tara Grinstead, an 11-year-old mystery that is the largest case file in Georgia’s history. Payne visits Ocilla, Georgia, speaks to her family and friends, gets insight into the suspects, visits the crime scene, and then, to all of our shock, there is a huge break in the case - spurred on by Payne's investigation over 10 years after her disappearance!

After being diagnosed with severe post natal depression in 2011, Brooke embarked on a one-woman mission to cut out the excess in her life and reconnect with what was really important. She learnt about minimalism and simplicity, immersed herself in the Slow Living philosophy and discovered the beautiful benefits of living with less.

Some of the topics covered in the Slow Home Podcast include slow living and social media, disconnecting, collaborative learning, boundaries, mindfulness and meditation.

5 of the best podcasts || True Crime || Jane Wonder Blog

I loved that this podcast wasn't really what I expected. It's a true-crime story bought to you by the LA Times and is a first hand account from John's wife, Debra, and her family. The narrator, Christopher Goffard, also spoke to investigators and attorneys and reviewed thousands of pages of court documents, police reports, restraining orders and prison records, as well as text messages and emails.

You won't believe the kind of ish that Dirty John gets up to, the lies he tells, and how manipulated his wife is, blinded by love.

The only part that disappointed me? There are only 6 episodes!

You can listen on the Podcast app on your iPhone (where I listen) or HERE

Please let me know if you want any more podcast recommendations - I've listened to so many in the last few months that I have loads :)

Hiya everyone

Now, I am not the first person to say this lately - but how on earth is it November already?!

I have been in malls a lot lately; for work (I am a brand manager in retail), shopping for Santa's Shoe Box and grocery shopping. I have also done my fair share of window shopping too, both in stores and online, and WOW! I have seen so many gorgeous swimsuits lately! There are so many new styles, prints and cuts - for bodies from the smaller end to the larger end of the scale.

I am very much on the larger end of the scale of late. I was a skinny-malink for about 25 years of my life, but with the change in hormones that a lot of us experience in our mid-20s I have piled on the weight and, admittedly, am way too lazy to try lose it... One of my excuses? I am going to London for three weeks, who needs a "bikini body" in wintery UK?

I read a stunning post from Superbalist's super-cool blog The Way of Us a couple of days ago. A local Instagram influencer, Nabeelah Staggiehas been dubbed swimfluencer by Superbalist's blog and has picked her ultimate swimsuit styles for summer '17. I was SO chuffed to see all of the flattering full-cossies on offer from Superbalist and international brands - such as Missguided (UK) and Vero Moda (Canada) - and local brands - such as Bacon Bikinis and Bikini Love. My full bodied figure is crying out in happiness!

I have chosen four of the seven styles to showcase today and have picked three or four swimsuits per style to show you photos :)

3. Fiji Swimsuit | Dorina | R299 | Shop here
4. Balconette Mesh Swimsuit | South Beach | R549 | Shop here

PS. I love how you can undo/remove the straps from the Fiji and Balconette Mesh Swimsuits so you don't get tan-lines!

1. Palm Print Bikini | South Beach | R249 for top and for bottoms | Shop top here and bottoms here
2. Julia Bikini | Vero Moda | R329 for top and R299 for bottom | Shop top here and bottoms here
3. Olivia Paradise Bikini | Beachcult | R549 for top and R379 for bottoms | Shop top here (on sale!) and bottoms here
4.  Jazz Holy Moly Bikini | Bikini Love | R299 for top and R299 for bottoms | Shop top here and bottoms here

PS. Again, the strap can be removed from the palm print bikini to make it boob tube. I recommend you attach it if you're having a swim - no lady wants a nip-slip!
How gorgeous is that yellow on the Julia bikini? Perfect for darker skin tones.
The high-waist on the Olivia Paradise is great for fuller-bodies ladies - but not always! Always try to try on the bottoms beforehand, I sometimes find that bikini bottoms that are lower down and tie at the side are more flattering than the high-waisted ones.
Also, don't you love the neon take on the ever-popular Triangl bikini with the Jazz Holy Moly? They have many other colours available, just search "Jazz Holy Moly" and you can pick and choose!
Lastly! I highly recommend you don't opt for a boob tube if you have a fuller bust. There is very little support and doesn't accentuate your beautiful figure.

1. Metal Details Plunge Swimsuit | Missguided | R499 | Shop here
2. Plunge Halter One-Piece | Dailyfriday | R399 | Shop here
3. Halterneck Zip Front Swimsuit | South Beach | R549 | Shop here
4. Hello Boys Slogan Swimsuit | Missguided | R449 | Shop here

1. Embroidered Triangle Bikini Top | South Beach | R269 | Shop here
2. Floral Embroidered Swimsuit | Missguided | R599 | Shop here
3. Embroidered Plunge Tie Neck Swimsuit | South Beach | R699 | Shop here

PS. That plunge tie neck with the embroidered detail is perfect for ladies with a smaller chest area - the detail gives the allusion of a fuller bust whereas styles such as boob tubes rather highlight the bust area which you may not want.

FYI, the other three styles that Nabeelah loves are "The strappy one", "Bardot lace-up" and "The nautical halterneck". These are my three least-fave styles she mentions, but still beautiful none the less!

• Life • 5 Short Term Fixes for Anxiety

• Life • 5 Short Term Fixes for Anxiety || Jane Wonder Blog

Hiya everyone ♡

I hope you've had a wonderful week so far!

Let me start this post off by saying that I am by no means an expert on anxiety, mental health, your struggles, etc. All I can say is that I have had my fair share of dealing with anxiety and it has taken me a long time to figure out a few small coping mechanisms to helps me when I felt my world was falling apart.

As mentioned, these are cool, little short term fixes. If you are battling with anxiety to the point where it is affecting your everyday life then it is time to put up your hand and say "can I have a little help over here, please?" There is nothing wrong with asking for help, if anything I applaud you for having the strength and courage for doing so.

Here are a few things that have helped me when I am about to implode...

• Life • 5 Short Term Fixes for Anxiety || Jane Wonder Blog

Never underestimate the power of nature! You know when people say they need some fresh air? They were really onto something there! The first time I realised it was when I was 'dying' of flu in London about 4 years back.

I was so sick that I could not will myself to get out of bed. My dad had booked a theatre show in the heart of London for that evening and there was no way I could miss it. So I used all my might and left the house (in zone 4) for central London. Wouldn't you know it? Even after a stuffy tube ride and walking from the tube station to the theatre in smoggy London Town - I already felt a hundred times better!

So now, when I am having a little freak out, or even when I burst into tears due to overwhelm-ment or frustration, I head outside for fresh air and have a little walk. The walk doesn't even need to be to anywhere, just getting your body moving almost takes a little strain off the running-mind.

This is a huge help for me. Having a semblance of calm around me really helps to focus my mind and get stuff done. My colleagues know that if I stand up and start moving around piles of paper and packing away my stationery then it is time to give me some space. When everything is neat and tidy in my immediate space then it allows me the 'white space' to go through whatever I need to in my mind.

The best part of this trick, I come home to a tidy home and come back to work to a tidy desk! What a joy?!

• Life • 5 Short Term Fixes for Anxiety || Jane Wonder Blog

My poor bestie... This girl needs a medal for all of the crap I talk to her about. She knows all of my colleagues and suppliers by name and, even though she's in a totally different industry, she knows all about the reports I need to write and struggles I have in my day-to-day tasks.

Not only does speaking to her every day in detail about my life bring us closer, but it really helps me work through stuff. Sometimes I fly into a full-on rant only to realise 5 minutes in that I am totally overacting or that it actually isn't really a 'problem' after all. Saying it out loud really helps to bring me perspective...

• Life • 5 Short Term Fixes for Anxiety || Jane Wonder Blog

The power of gratitude! I am sure that you would have heard before how actively appreciating what you have can help bring you more. It really is a magical thing. I always grappled with trying to remember that other people are going through worse times than you are - for heaven's sake what I am going through is affecting me directly and is really making me feel this bad!

Writing down things that you are genuinely are grateful for isn't the same as comparing your better-life to that of someone who really has a worse one, it only reminds you that you don't have it all that bad. There is good in your life, so much of it, and you really need to remember that!

Things to be grateful for; the fact that you have the resources to be reading this blog right now, that you have friends or family that will always be there for you, that you had the opportunity to go to school to further yourself in life, that you can choose what to have for lunch, etc.

• Life • 5 Short Term Fixes for Anxiety || Jane Wonder Blog

Sounds 'easier said than done' but I really don't think it is. My two favourite things to do are to blast rock music in my ears (I have an 'angry music' playlist filled with Linkin Park) to help me physically feel the mental anger or to watch a few fail compilations. I highly recommend FailArmy on YouTube and Ridiculousness on MTV.

Please drop me a comment if you have any other recommendations? I am always up for more tips, and I am sure other readers would be too. If you don't want to comment publicly then you are more than welcome to email me.

• Krispy Kreme • Doughnuts of the World launch in South Africa!

• Krispy Kreme South Africa • Doughnuts of the World •

Hiya everyone

What a pleasant surprise?! I really appreciate how brands have been upping their game lately with new launches, brand experiences, content creation etc. I was very #blessed to be sent a dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts yesterday (although, long story, they had to be taken back to store and I ended up collecting them today).

Krispy Kreme South Africa have just launched their Doughnuts of the World range! Inspired by the delicious flavours of iconic desserts from around the world, these doughnuts will take your taste buds on a flavourful journey.

I can tell you upfront that I brought these doughnuts to the office at about 2.30pm and they're all gone beside the Lemon Cheesecake and Banoffee Pie ones I forebode my colleagues from scoffing! There are only 6 of us here today, of which 4 are health/gym freaks who barely ever touch sugar! So, they're either that good or that budget forecast meeting on Wednesday really took it out of us ;)

I'll drop in some info below on flavours in more detail from the press release, but from my standpoint Krispy Kreme took some great inspiration from the UK and US, and locally of course, for their limited edition flavours. Not quite "of the world" but from across the globe, certainly!

There are two 'American flavours', the lemon cheesecake is a delish, unique flavoured bun while the Ol' Glory stuck with what they know - the original glazed just splashed with a little blue, red and white decor.
Side note, the original glazed will never beat any other doughnut that Krispy Kreme will ever release - it's just that good!

For the 'British flavours' we have an ode to strawberries and cream (which melts quite quickly, just so you know) and my favourite dessert flavour ever, Banoffee Pie *insert heart eyes emoji. Then there is a Banoffee Pie Kremey Chiller! Definitely hitting Gateway this weekend to grab one!

Local flavours include a good ol' apricot jam fill (is that unique to SA?) and then a caramel popcorn bun, which sadly doesn't appeal to me in the slightest...

So! Get to a Krispy Kreme before 31 August if you want to try these limited edition flavours. You won't regret it, but your waistline may...

Board the flavour plane and head to the United Kingdom for a Banoffee PieDoughnut, an unglazed shell filled with Banana Caramel Kreme dipped invanilla icing & topped with peanut brittle finished off with chocolate drizzle. While you’re there try the local favourite, of Strawberries and Kreme which isan unglazed shell sandwich of Strawberry Kreme, lightly dusted with polka dots& topped with a Strawberry Kreme swirl & fresh strawberry. It's back on the plane as we head to the United States, home of Krispy Kreme. Here as we indulge in the world famous Lemon Cheesecake doughnut, which isa shell filled with zesty Lemon Cheesecake Kreme, topped with crushedGraham Cracker & finished with lemon curd drizzle. As we know the UnitedStates are very patriotic so do not leave without tasting the Ol’ Glorydoughnut, - an Original Glazed ring, topped with hand piped blue, red & whiteicing finished off with blue, red and white sprinkles.
We head back home to South Africa for some of our local favourites; aCaramel Popcorn Doughnut which is an original glazed ring dipped in caramelicing, crowned with Caramel Popcorn and finished off with a chocolate drizzle. For those after something fruitier to tickle those taste buds the Apricot Jam
Filled doughnut is for you because it is an old school favourite of a shelldoughnut tossed in sugar while hot, and then filled with apricot jam.
To add to this wonderful adventure, Krispy Kreme South Africa is also bringingthe joy of the United Kingdom to you with the introduction of an ‘out of thisworld’ Banoffee Pie Kremey Chiller which is a caramel and banana infusedtopped with peanut brittle and caramel drizzle.
